Torrance Staycation {Travel}

Things to do in Torrance, California
By Carla Snuggs

As a Long Beach native living just 15 miles from Torrance, I have to admit I was clueless about Torrance’s treasures. I usually travel out of the country several times per year, but I’m realizing that there are so many wonderful reasons to consider a staycation in Torrance instead when I need a little rest and relaxation.

Discover Torrance and enjoy Japanese culture, a marvelous beach, fantastic restaurants and so much more.

Stay

Miyako Hybrid Hotel

So in love with this huge Japanese soaking tub at @miyakohyrbidhotel thanks for the wonderful stay and amazing hospitality! @discovertorrance #discovertorrance AD

The Miyako Hybrid Hotel is an idyllic place to stay in Torrance. It’s especially great if you need to mix a little business with pleasure. The hotel is conveniently located close to incredible Authentic Japanese restaurants and grocery stores and it’s about 15 minutes from the beach. The rooms are both spacious and spotless. Each room has a Japanese-style bathroom with a large soaking tub. Check out the hotel’s spa hot stone room as well as their restaurant Ise-Shima. You can also order room-service, wrap up some work at the business center and buy wine and cookies at the gift shop.

When you visit South Coast Botanic Garden, you’ll feel like you stepped into another world. It’s 87 acres of lush gardens in beautiful Palos Verdes Peninsula. You’ll experience blooming trees, shrubs, and flowers from all around the world. There are so many amazing places in the garden to picnic, relax and explore. I spent the vast majority of time in their new, lush rose garden. South Coast Botanic Garden offers a wide range of programing and events for people of all ages, such as yoga, family movie night and art classe.

Torrance Beach

Torrance Beach is truly a hidden gem. I had no idea this picturesque, pristine, peaceful beach was just around the bend. I don’t believe I’ve ever seen a beach this beautiful without hordes of people. Rent a bike and take a ride down the bike path, play volleyball and grab a bite at the concession stand. The view is stunnding and the surf here is great.  Oh, and the parking is free!

If you’re a ramen fiend like me and you’re craving the real deal, stop by Hakata Ikkousha Ramen for authentic ramen. You won’t feel intimidated by the menu; you’ll receive an ordering sheet that lets you customize your bowl of ramen exactly how you want it. I tried the Shoyu Hybrid ramen with soft noodles. It was budget friendly and oh-so perfect.

Restoration Kitchen and Wine

Wine lovers will appreciate Restoration Kitchen & Wine, a modern restaurant in Old Torrance known for their beautiful seasonal dishes and wine flights. I appreciate their shareable small plate dishes; you can taste a variety of dishes without spending a fortune. Enjoy a cheese and charcuterie board and local craft beers on the outdoor patio. Recommendation: Seared scallops with lemon thyme risotto.

Ise-Shime

Ise-Shime at Miyako Hybrid Hotel is absolutely fit for foodies. This upscale Japanese restaurant is known for its super-fresh sushi, contemporary Japanese dishes, and beautiful cocktails. We enjoyed a sumptuous Blue Crab Dip with avocado and tomato and a California Roll, followed by Washu Beef Sirloin Steak and Miso Marinated Black Cod. Both entrees were tender, cooked to perfection and served with finesse. And, of course, we enjoyed plenty of Japanese green tea.

Tortilla Cantina

I happened to visit Tortilla Cantina for the World Cup final.  This taco gastropub is a local favorite located in Old Torrance. They were having a limited breakfast menu with Menudo, Posole and breakfast burritos along with a complimentary chips and salsa bar. I opted for a large bowl of Posole, a chorizo, egg and spicy potato burrito and a little bubbly! I had a blast chatting with the locals and learning a bit more about Old Torrance.

Torrance is truly one of the great jewels in Los Angeles County and makes for a great staycation spot. Also, because it’s not far from LAX, it’s perfect for travelers who want to skip the hustle and bustle of Los Angeles. What are you waiting for? Visit Torrance!
