Safety Tips for Young Renters

Whether you’re renting for the first time in college or recently moved out of your parent’s house, there are some things you should know about basic home safety. In this article, we’ll share a few key tips to help young renters feel safe living on their own.

Research the Neighborhood

One of the first things you should do before signing the renter’s lease is to thoroughly research the neighborhood to make sure the area is a safe place to live. This could include doing an online search, asking friends or acquaintances who live nearby, speaking with local shop owners, or even driving through the area to scout it out. This way you’ll be well-informed about the neighborhood and could avoid any possible nightmare situation.

Pay Attention to the Details

While taking a walk through the apartment and property, take notice of any areas that could spell trouble. This should include checking the hallways, stairwells, and common areas to make sure there is proper lighting, as this could help prevent intruders or creeps from lurking in the shadows.

Also take notice of how well the property is maintained. If you see garbage in plain sight, excessive plant growth, or broken windows and locks, then it stands to reason that the property owner probably doesn’t have the needs and safety of his tenants as a main priority. This could be another reason to avoid signing the contract.

Check the Doors and Windows

Obviously one of the biggest parts of safety would be to check the integrity of the doors and windows throughout the residence. Are the doors and windows modern and do they offer strong locking mechanisms or do they look outdated and questionable?

Remember to check all entry points, which would include side doors, basement or cellar entrances, and windows above the first floor. It’s these seldom used or out-of-the-way points of entry that can sometimes go overlooked and forgotten about, which is exactly what intruders are banking on.

Get to Know Your Neighbors

This safety tip is totally free but could prove to be one of the most effective and valuable forms of home safety available. The reason is that most people you come in contact with are generally good individuals. Like you, they want to live in a safe neighborhood and they’ll be mindful of activities going on around the area. As you get to know your neighbors, you’ll be able to provide each other with important information, share timely news, and even warn each other of suspicious activity if it becomes warranted.

If you’re not outgoing enough to speak with your neighbors directly, then see if there is a neighborhood community online that you can join to stay up to date with neighborhood news.

Upgrade Home Security

Another idea would be to speak with your new landlord to see if there are options to set up some kind of security system for your apartment. Advances in technology provide a variety of home security systems to choose from. You can invest in a state-of-the-art system or a more budget friendly option that will fit your individual needs. You’ll also be able to find plenty of DIY options so if you move again in the future you can just use the same equipment in the next place.
