CBD vs. THC Edibles: Differences Explained

Some would call it the reinvention of the wheel (the wheel in this case being cannabis). And some would say our consumption of cannabis is simply evolving with the technology currently available. However you describe the cannabis phenomena, there is definitely an increased interest in different ways of consuming this plant. You may even be a little unclear on what many of these products are and what they can do for you. Let’s take a moment to explain the two more popular types of cannabis products on the market, CBD and THC edibles. The two are not the same, although they are derived from the same plant.

CBD

There has been an explosion of CBD products on the market. Some are oils, some are creams, some are tinctures--there are plenty of options to buy quality CBD products online. But such a variety can make things a little confusing, especially if you’re not sure what CBD can do for you. CBD is the short name given to cannabidiol. It is most often derived from hemp (a very low THC species), not marijuana (a high THC species). This plant derivative is used to reduce inflammation and pain. The FDA has approved it as an anti-seizure medication for those who suffer from certain types of epilepsy. Those who use CBD products are usually looking to improve the symptoms of anxiety, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, cancer, arthritis and more.

THC Edibles

Edibles are nothing new, but the types of edibles that are available now are a long way from the “weed brownies” of the 1960s and 1970s. Edibles of today can range from smoothies to gummies to fried chicken. New and improved ways of extracting THC from marijuana has allowed people to use it in more ways than ever before. THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is the active compound in marijuana that produces feelings of euphoria and heightened visual and auditory sensations. Unlike CBD products, delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol edibles will produce a high very similar to smoking cannabis. It’s easy to overdo edibles, so be sure to start small if you’ve never tried edibles before.

Benefits

There is a lot of research being done on the active compounds found in cannabis, and you may be surprised at many of the implications that are coming to light. Even the FDA is taking notice. Although marijuana is considered to be a schedule I drug, many states are working towards legalization and decriminalization. Many people who use cannabis products therapeutically have reported awesome side effects that have improved their lives. Some of these include controlling eczema and atopic dermatitis, chronic pain, depression and anxiety, stress, insomnia and nausea. The list of benefits of cannabis derived products is growing longer and longer as more research is being done.

So you see, the main difference between CBD and THC edibles is that THC will produce a psychotropic high and the CBD will not. CBD is thought to be more therapeutic for the physical body, while THC tends to be more effective for the mental body. There are lots of ways to incorporate these products into your life, just be sure to consult your medical professional and keep in mind the legality of the products in your area.
