How to Pack Your Jewelry for Travel

How to Pack Your Jewelry for Travel

Going on vacation or simply traveling to a new locale for a while can provide some much-needed rest and relaxation. However, that R&R can disappear in an instant if you learn that your jewelry has gone missing with no chance of finding it.

Just remember, traveling with jewelry can be hard, but it's not impossible — so long as you follow the best practices. Not sure where to start? Here's what you need to know about how to travel safely with jewelry.

Travel

Be sure to pack it in a safe container, like the original engagement ring box. Put it in your carry on or wear it during the flight. As there's always a chance that your luggage could be lost or mishandled, it's a good idea to keep your jewelry pieces on you at all times during the flight and at the airport. If you are storing your jewelry in a carry-on, be sure that you have chosen a secure bag.

Some bags are equipped with anti-theft features that are designed to deter would-be thieves by making their job a lot harder. If you’re looking for a secure bag, some features to look out for include anti-slash fabric, locking zippers, and steel-reinforced shoulder straps or handles. However, if your bag lacks these features, simply utilize a small secure container to store jewelry. Luckily, there are a plethora of portable secure jewelry boxes on the market.

Ask Ahead About Secure Storage at Your Hotel

That said, it's essential to call ahead to ask whether your hotel offers secure storage in its rooms. It's better to be safe than sorry, in these situations. Hotels are notorious for having many people coming and going throughout the day. Without a safe, your jewelry could make for the perfect target. If a safe isn't available, be sure to bring a lock for your suitcase and a bike lock to attach it to something in your hotel room. That way, thieves can't get in your suitcase or make off with it.

Be Aware of Where You're Wearing Jewelry

Not every exotic locale is known for its low crime rates. As a traveler, it's vital to research the place that you will be traveling to before visiting. With information about crime rates and theft, you can make an informed decision about whether it would be a good idea to wear your expensive jewelry (especially something as valuable as a diamond engagement ring) while exploring the area. Be smart about where you wear your jewelry on your trip and leave it at the hotel if you're in an unsafe area.

Plan Ahead for Activities

While jewelry makes for the perfect accessory in most cases, it's not exactly the best thing to wear when you're on a vacation laden with physical activities. For example, if you are going scuba diving, snorkeling, hiking, or any other variety of vacation activity, it's best if you leave the jewelry and other valuables behind. If not, you'll risk losing them in the ocean (as Kim Kardashian once figured out the hard way), theft, or simply discomfort during your day.

Get Insurance

Travel and jewelry insurance won't stop your items from leaving your possession during your trip, but it will make the loss a lot less significant. Be sure to have insurance on anything of value BEFORE you go on your trip. This could save you thousands of dollars and lots of headaches. With a good policy, you can be reimbursed for any losses you experience during the trip, so be sure to do your due diligence to ensure that you choose the best policy for your needs.

Conclusion

Traveling with jewelry requires some effort and ingenuity, but it's not impossible. Don't be afraid to pack your nice watch or diamond earrings. Simply follow the tips above and you'll greatly reduce your chances of suffering the massive blow of having your jewelry lost or stolen during your trip.
