The Activewear Sins To Avoid - How Not To Wear Workout Clothing

One of the biggest fashion trends right now is Activewear. If you’ve been living under a rock and are not sure what activewear is it’s essentially workout apparel that can be worn both in and out of the gym.

The versatility of this apparel is one reason why it has become so popular. Athleisure clothing has normalized wearing workout gear to the mall, the coffee shop, and many more places. 

However, contrary to popular belief, it’s not totally acceptable to wear this style everywhere. There are unwritten rules to activewear clothing and there is certainly a line that should not be crossed. If you want to rock this trend with style, here are the 4 biggest activewear sins to avoid.

  1. Not washing your apparel regularly

Although this seems like a given, it’s surprising how many people will go straight from a sweaty spin class to the coffee shop without changing or even freshening up. 

Of course, if you have been to a gentle low-impact yoga class, you may not have worked up a sweat. Therefore, changing your outfit is not necessary. As a general rule of thumb, if you have sweated during your workout, it’s not a good idea to stay in your activewear. 

On the subject of hygiene, your gym clothes should be washed after every use. Your jeans might be fine to wear a few times before washing, but these rules do not apply to athleisure outfits, no matter how good the moisture control is. 

2. Not mixing materials

The key to a chic activewear look is to mix gym wear materials such as mesh and lycra with non-gym appropriate materials such as cotton or denim. For example, by combining your favorite Fabletics yoga pants with a cute denim jacket, you’ll create an edgy but sporty look. While wearing a full lycra outfit to your HITT class may be a brilliant choice, it’s not quite so suitable for a lunch date with friends.

3. Inappropriate accessorizing 

Clever accessorizing can transform your gym outfit completely, but choose carefully. A couple of key pieces like sunglasses and a leather jacket combined with your leggings and tank top will quickly and effortlessly turn your sporty look into more of a street vibe.

Don’t go overboard with accessories. One or two pieces is enough. Moreover, opt for accessories that already have a sleek, sporty feel themselves. 

4. Not keeping up with seasonal trends

Just because activewear is a trend itself does not mean that whatever clothes you buy from a retailer's activewear range will be in fashion. Styles change each season and seasonal fashion trends should be considered and integrated into your workout outfits. By staying in the loop with the current season's colors, patterns, and fabrics, you can easily incorporate the latest trends into your gym clothes.

As you can see, with just some basic understanding of how this fashion trend works, you’ll confidently know how to rock it for all occasions, thus avoiding that dreaded sensation of feeling underdressed or slobby.
