4 DIY Coffee Skincare Recipes

Skincare products you can make at home using coffee
By Carla Snuggs

It’s no secret that I am a coffee fiend and lately I’ve been doing more than just drinking it. Recently, I’ve learned about the benefits of using ground coffee in my skincare products and I am delighted to share that info with you along with 4 easy coffee-infused skincare recipes straight from 4 skincare experts!

According to Debra Jaliman M.D., Assistant Professor of Dermatology, a board-certified dermatologist and author of the book "Skin Rules":

“Coffee beans contain antioxidants called quinines. Antioxidants are beneficial for the skin because they complex free radicals which come from the environment and from pollution in cigarette smoke. So instead of the free radicals damaging your skin (collagen and elastic tissue) they combine with the antioxidants preventing damage to your skin. Coffee also contains an antibacterial compound called trigonelline and caffeine. The caffeine in coffee is often extracted and used in skin care products to cause vasoconstriction or a tightening of blood vessels. This is used in eye creams and in cellulite creams. ”

Here is Dr. Jaliman’s recipe for a coffee mask:

DIY Coffee Mask

  • 1 tablespoon of honey
  • 1 tablespoon of yogurt
  • 4 tablespoons of freshly ground coffee

Directions: Combine ingredients, then apply to your face in a circular motion with warm water then leave on for 15 minutes take off with a warm washcloth

Skin Authority shares the following DIY Coffee Salt Scrub that can be used as a gift:

DIY Coffee Salt Scrub

  • 1 cup ground coffee or Skin Authority Coffee Almond Scrub
  • 1 Tbsp. Kosher Salt
  • 1/3 cup oil of your choice (coconut oil works nicely)
  • For added scent, a few drops of extract (such as vanilla or almond) or your favorite essential oil (we love jasmine and bergamot)

Directions: For added scent, a few drops of extract (such as vanilla or almond) or your favorite essential oil  Grind your coffee beans, or use ground coffee, or the Coffee Almond Scrub. Put into a bowl, add salt and stir together. Add the oil and extract, stir. Store in an airtight container. This scrub helps redistribute fat cells and decrease the formation of cellulite.  This scrub can be placed in jars with some ribbon and a label and be given as holiday gifts.

Firming Coffee Facial Treatment

Hollywood's beauty, nutraceutical expert, and best-selling author, including his recent "Cooking Your Way to Gorgeous", Scott-Vincent Borba, shares the following treatment to help firm and tighten sagging facial skin:

Ingredients:

  • Hot towel
  • 1 Cup Greek yogurt
  • 1 Cup buttermilk
  • Tsp. freshly brewed coffee grounds
  • 5 Vitamin E tocotrienol capsules
  • 1 Tbsp. aloe vera gel

Directions: Blend all of the ingredients together and slather on your face. Cover with a moist, hot towel until it cools. Then rinse. Be sure to take the tocotrienol capsules by mouth daily too. They contain powerful antioxidants sourced from Malaysian palm fruit oil which have a number of health benefits including potentially delaying the aging of skin cells.
