What Is Abdominoplasty? How a Tummy Tuck Works & What to Expect

Designate a support person who will know about the procedure, provide you with rides there and home, serve as an emergency contact, and help you physically and emotionally while you heal.

You will need to begin with an evaluation and bloodwork. Then, follow your doctor's instructions prior to the surgery. You may need to just take your medications, quit smoking, and fast before surgery.

How Tummy Tucks Work

Abdominoplasty works similarly to any other surgical procedure. You can expect to undergo general anesthesia to keep you comfortable during the procedure. 

The surgeon begins with a horizontal incision that runs across the pubic hairline. The amount of excess skin will determine the shape and size of the incision. 

To remove skin and fat in the upper abdomen, the surgeon will make a second incision near the belly button.

At the incision sites, the surgeon lifts the skin to repair muscle, remove fat, and trim and reposition excess skin. Your surgeon will use sutures to neatly close up your tummy.

Tummy Tuck Aftercare

Expect months of taking it easy following abdominal surgery. You will experience pain, swelling, bruising, and burning as the incision heals.

You will manage your pain with medications prescribed by your doctor. Also, expect to wear an abdominal wrap for weeks to reduce pain and swelling.

You may need to sponge bathe until the doctor gives the okay to shower. Watch for signs of infection, such as excessive pain, fever, and pus drainage.

1. Give Yourself a Spa Day

This one might seem controversial, but it's true. Spa days aren't just for women, and when you accept that, you'll be well on your way to smooth skin and a calm mind.

When you get too stressed out from work or other responsibilities, it takes a toll on your mind and body. You might feel sore, fatigued, and constantly stressed out.

While you can't always make time to visit a spa (and you might not be interested in doing so), you can make a spa day at home.

Go all out when you're doing this. If you're lucky enough to have a large bathtub, draw a warm bath with Epsom salts (or a bath bomb if you're feeling fancy). If not, take a shower and then prepare a foot bath.

You'll feel soft, smoothed, and completely relaxed.

2. Make Time for Hobbies

How much time do you devote to the things that you enjoy?

People of all genders often neglect their hobbies, but some men feel as though they have an added pressure to be the "responsible and hardworking" person in the house.

Being responsible doesn't mean disallowing fun. Why not revisit things that you loved to do in the past?

Make time every week to spend with a hobby. Whether it's drawing, gaming, writing, or anything else, you deserve it!

3. Exercise

Are you someone who likes to stay active? You already know the healing power of exercise.

If you're not, let's explain. When you work out, your body releases endorphins. These endorphins can help alleviate pain, soothe anxiety, and give you a fresh burst of energy.

This means that not only is exercise great for your body, it's also great for your mind. Whether you like to run, lift weights, or just take walks around the neighborhood, you'll be taking care of yourself. 

4. Socialize With Friends

How often do you see your friends?

As adults, maintaining friendships gets harder. You're busy with work, your family, your romantic relationships, and any other responsibilities that fill your time. 

You need to take time for yourself to socialize with your friends. Socialization will make you feel energized and give you a chance to decompress.
